Wahl 09864-016 | My Short Review

Wahl 09864-016 is in my opinion a good and well built multipurpose trimmer. In this review I will tell you what I liked about this model and what I didn't.

Wahl 09864-016 | My Short Review
The ergonomy and ease of use in Wahl 09864-016 is good

In general the Wahl 09864-016 is a well built and easy to use multigroomer.

Below you can find my recap where I briefly discuss the pros and cons of this model.

Wahl 09864-016

I am rating the Wahl 09864-016 4 out of 5 stars.

What I like:

  • Built quality - the full metal housing
  • The ergonomics - although the shape of the handle is not ergonomically shaped (curved) as in many competing models, I liked working with the trimmer.
  • The comb attachments for setting your preferred cutting length have metal clips that you click on the blade. In my opinion a much better (much more durable) solution compared to plastic comb attachments.
  • You can use it cordless or plugged in

Not Bad:

  • The blades - both the T-blade and the narrower one - made of stainless steel, cutting performance ok, nothing extraordinary in my opinion
  • The travel pouch with 2 compartments, quite well made. Nothing sophisticated, but it does the job.

Possible weak points:

  • Not fully waterproof. To be honest not a big problem for me, as I never use any grooming tools in the shower or in the bath.
  • Foil shaver attachment - on my medium coarse beard the shave was very average. I got much better results with foil shavers included for example in Babyliss MT726E or Remington PG9100.

The body of the trimmer is made of stainless steel and you feel you hold in your hand a high end trimmer.

Mat finish with subtle details on the front panel…

It looks sleek and elegant.

If you require your trimmer to be fully waterproof, unfortunately the Wahl 09864-016 does not offer this feature.

The body should not be immersed in the water and you can rinse under the running water all the blades and attachments.

The blades are made of stainless steel and in order to get efficient trim every time you will need to lubricate them regularly with blade oil.

There are 2 main blades in this set.

The first one is a wider T-blade that is about 40 mm wide.

There is a set of comb attachments (8 pieces) that work with it.

These wider combs are meant mainly for cutting your hair, but of course you can use them on the beard as well.

You only have to remember that trimming a beard with a wider blade (and combs) is not as convenient as with a dedicated narrower blade.

The T-blade alone can be also helpful in styling some details on your beard.

There is also the narrower blade and 5 combs that you can pop on the blade.

They are best for trimming your beard and possibly you could trim or shave your body hair with them.

What I really like about the comb attachments is their metal clips.

I would say they will last much longer compared to standard combs entirely made of plastic.

The combs sit on the blade quite well.

No iritating problem with loose attachments.

The highest length setting is 25 mm.

I don’t think the Wahl 9864-016 Lithium Ion+ Advanced is good for efficient hair cutting.

Nevertheless you have such an option if you want.

There’s also an adjustable comb for stubble.

It allows you to set 10 different cutting lengths between 1 and 10 millimeters.

There are 1 mm increments.

In my opinion the comb is very simple and I would expect a more sophisticated solution in a multipurpose trimmer for about 100 USD.

The foil shaver attachment in Wahl 9864-016 Lithium Ion+ did not manage to shave my beard efficiently.

The surface of the foil is small.

I got much better results with foil shavers included for example in Babyliss MT726E or Remington PG9100.

Finally we have the “nose and ears attachment”.

The design is well known from any popular multigroom trimmers, like Braun, Philips or Babyliss.

In my case this attachment works quite well.
