Philips MG9553/15 My Honest Review
The Philips MG9553/15 stands as my top-rated all-in-one trimmer. Read on for the full, hands-on review, where I break down the real-world performance of both devices and analyze every accessory included in the kit.
Philips MG9553/15 | Summary / TL;DR
I rate the Philips MG9553/15 with 4,5 stars out of 5.
What I like:
- General Versatility & Build Quality. The Philips MG9553/15 comes with literally all tools you need for a full men's grooming routine.
- Adjustable combs for beard. Previous Philips multigroomer generations relied heavily on individual fixed-length combs, forcing you to constantly swap attachments mid-trim just to get the job done. This set uses three adjustable combs instead, allowing you to quickly dial in your preferred length without the constant hassle of snapping combs on and off.
Not bad:
- Body Shaving Attachment: The performance is decent and gets the job done. However, expect to make a few extra passes when dealing with denser bulk removal.
- Included Philips OneBlade: This kit comes with a baseline version of the OneBlade. While basic, the standard blade performs reliably for close shaving and establishing clean line-ups or edging along the neck and cheeks.
Possible weak points:
- Cordless-Only Operation: If you prefer a trimmer that runs while plugged into a wall outlet, note that the MG9553/15 operates strictly on battery power. This is a built-in safety feature, as the device is fully waterproof and rated for safe shower use.
- No Foil Shaver Attachment: If your previous groomer included a dedicated foil shaver attachment for ultra-smooth skin detailing, you will notice its absence here. Competitors like the Remington PG9100, Braun AIO Series 7 or BaByliss MT727E include this tool out of the box, making it a missed opportunity for this kit.

This Philips All-in-One Trimmer Series 9000 is a premium, multi-functional groomer that includes a wide T-blade alongside six dedicated fixed guide combs.
This specific configuration delivers the cutting width and efficiency needed for fast, clean hair clipping and bulk removal.

The body of the main unit looks and feels solid, offering a premium hand feel.
Most of the handle is made from stainless steel, while the top portion features a rubberized grip to prevent slipping, even when used under running water in the shower.
Philips All-in-One Series 9000 is my top pick in multigroom trimmers as it delivers:
- most versatility - beard, body, hair (in some models)
- included OneBlade ensures safe shaving,
- built quality is nice,
- IPX7 waterproof,
- 1 hour full-charge
- and if you pick a set with additional wider T-blade you will be able to cut your hair efficiently too.

The included Philips OneBlade handle is a very basic entry-level unit.
Upon turning it on, the motor feels slightly underpowered, giving the impression that it might stall.
While it gets the job done—delivering a safe shave and clean lines for a precise line-up—it lacks the power and build quality found in the standalone standard or Pro lines of Philips OneBlade shavers.

The OneBlade unit comes equipped with the standard blade rather than the newer 360 version, though it is fully compatible with the OneBlade 360 blade if you choose to upgrade.
Regardless of which blade you use, it delivers a skin-safe shave and handles sharp detailing and line-ups reliably.
Still...the main variable is blade longevity before it begins tugging or pulling.
While Philips claims a single blade lasts up to 4 months, real-world longevity spans anywhere from 1 to 6 months or more, depending entirely on your hair density and frequency of use.

This is the main 30mm trimmer blade, designed primarily for beard maintenance.
In testing, it delivers smooth performance with no tugging or pulling.
The blade is not zero-gapped, so it will not produce ultra-crisp edges.
However, you can easily achieve those sharp lines using the included OneBlade.

You can remove the blade by pressing against its edge with your thumb.
You should remove the blade regularly to clean out the chamber underneath.
Hair clippings will accumulate there after a few uses, which can impact performance if left unchecked.

The narrow nose and ear trimmer blade also handles fine beard detailing.
While basic, it gets the job done.
Personally, it feels a bit redundant in this kit; you can easily clear nose and ear hair using the main blade or the edge of the OneBlade (my personal opinion).

The kit also includes these three adjustable beard guards.
While you could technically try a haircut with them, the process would be rather inefficient.
The adjustable mechanism relies on a standard all-plastic design, meaning the prongs flex slightly if you apply too much pressure—especially at the longer length settings.
However, under normal use, they get the job done without issue.

Philips likely introduced these adjustable combs to address a major flaw in previous Multigroom generations, which relied heavily on individual fixed guards.
Those older kits came with an excessive number of attachments that were difficult to organize and easily lost over time.
Consolidating into fewer adjustable guards provides more length settings with less clutter.
While the plastic design isn't flawless, reducing the attachment count is a definitive step forward for everyday convenience.

Next is the adjustable stubble guard, which features micro-adjustments ranging from 1 mm to 3 mm.
It moves in 0.2 mm increments, which technically gives you excellent control over your cutting length.
However, I give this attachment a 3 out of 5 stars.
It lacks a reliable, sturdy feel—the all-plastic build gives it the impression of a cheap toy.
But to be fair, it gets the job done.

Next up are the four fixed hair guards.
Designed to snap onto the wider T-blade, they fit securely without any play or rattling.
The set includes the following lengths:
- 4mm
- 9mm
- 12mm
- 16mm
When it comes to cutting head hair, as you can see your length options are quite limited.
That is the typical trade-off with an all-in-one grooming kit engineered to handle full-body maintenance.

This is how 4mm and 16 mm guards look like snapped on the blade.

The Philips MG9553/15 kit also includes two dedicated fading guards designed for the wider T-blade—one for the right side and one for the left ear.
To be honest, these specialty guards rarely make it into my rotation.
In my experience, they only work decently on very short hair.
Once the hair gets slightly longer, the blades fail to feed properly and the guards lose their effectiveness.

For body grooming, the kit includes two fixed guards: a 3mm and a 5mm option.
They snap securely onto the 30mm blade with no loose play.
When managing sensitive areas, the 3mm guard is the safest choice to prevent skin irritation and nicks; for me it has performed reliably without any issues.
The 5mm guard is less practical for close body grooming and generally goes unused (my opinion).

Next up is the fixed eyebrow guard, which remains unused in my case.
I don’t style my eyebrows, so I can't speak to its performance.
I can, however, confirm that it snaps securely onto the 30mm blade with zero wobble.

The body shaver attachment performs best on short or low-density hair.
If you need to clear a dense or heavily overgrown area, it is much more efficient to take down the bulk first using the main trimmer blade, then clean up the remaining stubble with the body shaver.

The blade on the body shaver attachment is protected by a removable guard.
I highly recommend leaving this guard on, removing it only when it is time to clean the unit.
I tried using the attachment without the guard, and as expected, shortly after it resulted in a painful nick.
Keep the guard on to protect your skin.

The travel pouch is basic but functional.
It easily fits the entire kit, including both devices and all accompanying accessories.
However, for regular travelers, a dedicated hard-shell case would offer much better protection.

As you can see, the charging cable still lacks a USB-C connection.
While the USB-A end allows you to charge from a laptop, power bank, or phone wall adapter, the device end relies on a proprietary Philips connector.
If you lose or damage this cable while traveling, you cannot simply swap it for a standard cord—you will have to order a specific replacement online.
